Understanding pre & post-surgery physio
Pre & post-surgery physiotherapy
No matter where you are in your surgical journey, physiotherapy can set you up for a stronger recovery. Pre-surgery physiotherapy prepares your body and mind for the physical demands of your procedure, while post-surgery physio focuses on rehabilitation and restoring strength, mobility and confidence. By “prehabbing” your body before surgery, you may reduce reliance on support aids and support a faster, more efficient recovery. No matter how big or small, surgery has a significant impact on your life - preparing for it with the right pre- and post-surgery physio can prevent extended recovery times and help you reconnect with your body.

Our approach
How we work pre & post-surgery
Surgery is one step in your recovery. What happens before and afterwards can make a real difference to your long-term outcome.
Your physiotherapy programme is tailored to your procedure, stage of recovery, age, lifestyle and goals.
We'll help you understand what to expect at each stage and, where appropriate, work collaboratively with your surgeon, consultant or wider medical team to help you get the best possible outcome from your surgery.

Hands-on physiotherapy & soft tissue therapy
Hands-on treatment to reduce pain and stiffness, improve mobility and support your body through each stage of recovery.

Movement rehabilitation
Controlled, progressive movement tailored to your procedure and stage of recovery, helping restore mobility, stability and confidence in how you move.

Strength & functional rehabilitation
Progressive strength training to rebuild capacity and prepare your body for the demands of everyday life, work, exercise or sport.

Education & recovery guidance
We help you understand what's happening in your body, what to expect at each stage and how to progress safely. You'll leave with the knowledge, exercises and strategies to take an active role in your recovery.

Step 2
Your treatment plan
A personalised plan built around your back, your life, and your goals. Combining hands-on therapy, movement rehabilitation and, where it serves you, coaching, massage or strength work from the wider SF Studios team.

Step 3

FAQ's
Frequently asked questions
How soon before surgery should I start prehab?
We encourage all our patients to remain ‘full-body’ patients; thus, we continue mobility and strength throughout the whole body. The only reasons for you not to attend your Physio would be if you are strictly forbidden by your specialist and/or the pain or discomfort of getting to SF Studios is too great. We use the time before surgery to help you prepare mentally, emotionally and physically as best as you can. This preparation builds confidence. Patients who are prepared fare overall better after surgery.
How soon after surgery can I start physiotherapy?
It depends on your procedure and your surgeon's guidance. We'll coordinate with you to start at the right time. We often see clients early on for guided, careful rehabilitation and a structured plan to get you back to full strength and confidence. When you are in a position to return to SF Studios, our approach remains ‘whole-body physio’. We encourage most of our patients to return after two weeks, as we protect ‘the healing phase’.
Which procedures do you support?
We support all procedures. We are fully trained musculoskeletal physiotherapists with a lot of experience. Tamas has first-hand experience in ACL surgery, and Suz in rotator cuff and complex upper limb surgery.
Do I need a GP referral to see a physiotherapist?
No. You can book directly with a private physiotherapist. No referral is needed. Just book an initial consultation through our website or by phone.
Is private physiotherapy covered by health insurance?
Our physiotherapists are registered with Aviva and WPA. We operate on a self-pay basis and provide a detailed invoice for reimbursement. Clients have also claimed with providers including Vitality and Healix, depending on their coverage. Check your policy or contact your insurer directly to confirm your level of cover and reimbursement eligibility.
What's the difference between the Senior and Director physiotherapist?
Both are HCPC-registered. Tamas provides expert-led, hands-on assessment and treatment for post-surgical rehab, sports injuries and ACL recovery. Suz (Director, founder) provides Director-level clinical care for complex cases that benefit from strategic rehabilitation across her wider expertise in coaching and movement. If you're not sure which is right for you, get in touch and we'll help you decide.
